The senior's road: roles, certificates and a one-year plan
Lesson 5 of 5
5The senior's road: roles, certificates and a one-year plan
The big pictureA junior knows the commands. A mid-level knows why they work. A senior knows when not to use them, and explains that to others. The road there is years of work, but it is not a mystery: clear roles, known certificates, and a way to make your expertise visible. This lesson maps your next year.
What the picture shows: Expertise builds in order: pick a role, go deep, prove it with projects, then a certificate, then teach it, and teaching is the strongest test of your understanding.

Two ways into the same idea
Think of medicine: after years of general practice a doctor picks a speciality, then becomes the consultant asked about hard cases. Networking is the same: you pick a field (company networks, data centres, the cloud or automation), go deep, and become the person asked when nobody knows. Certificates are like board exams: they prove you passed a standard, but patients know you by your results.
CCNP Enterprise: a core exam 350-401 ENCOR (design, virtualisation, infrastructure, assurance, security and automation) and one concentration exam (such as advanced routing ENARSI, design, wireless or SD-WAN). CCIE Enterprise Infrastructure: the same ENCOR as the qualifying exam, then an 8-hour hands-on lab in design, deployment and operations. Other certificates: AWS Certified Advanced Networking – Specialty and Azure Network Engineer Associate (AZ-700) for the cloud, Juniper's (JNCIP and JNCIE), and Cisco's automation track (formerly DevNet). Certificates usually renew every 3 years by exam or continuing-education credits. Check the official exam page before you start, since syllabuses change.

The Core Idea
1Where does a senior stand?
Roles branch out after the mid-level. Each has a different day and different skills. Pick what suits you, not what looks shiniest.
| Role | The day | Key skill | Fitting certificate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Senior network engineer | Solves the hardest faults and leads changes | Routing and deep troubleshooting | CCNP then CCIE |
| Network architect | Writes designs and defends them | Requirements, numbers, communication | CCDE or CCNP with the design concentration |
| Data centre network engineer | Builds and grows fabrics | Spine-leaf, EVPN, BGP | CCNP Data Center |
| Cloud network engineer | Designs hubs and hybrid links | Cloud and Terraform | AWS Advanced Networking or AZ-700 |
| Network automation engineer | Builds tools and the source of truth | Python, APIs and CI | Cisco's automation track |
2Visible expertise
The job market cannot see inside your head. Make your expertise visible: a GitHub repo with your labs and projects (the branch and the capstone), written post-mortems of faults you solved (without company secrets), a small contribution to an open tool, and explanations for your colleagues. Someone who writes down what they understood clearly gets the interview before someone holding more certificates.
3A one-year plan
This plan is for an engineer past CCNA who works or trains, at about 8 to 10 hours a week. Press each phase. Do not move on before its "done when" holds.
A 12-month plan to senior level
A few hours every week beats long scattered days. Half the time is lab.
1 · The whole mid-level stage
- Goal
- Locking in everything in stage 2 of this path.
- What you do
- Walk the stage 2 lessons in order, build the branch project, and publish it.
- Done when
- The failure-test table is published, and you explain BGP, HSRP and QoS to a colleague without notes.
2 · The ENCOR core exam
- Goal
- Enterprise depth with a certificate.
- What you do
- Study the official 350-401 objectives line by line, a lab per objective, and timed practice tests.
- Done when
- You beat 85% on three practice tests in a row, then pass the exam.
3 · The concentration
- Goal
- A full CCNP in the role you chose.
- What you do
- Pick the concentration exam that fits your role (advanced routing, design or SD-WAN), or a cloud certificate if your role is cloud.
- Done when
- You hold CCNP or the cloud certificate, and added a published lab in the speciality.
4 · Senior: design and automation
- Goal
- The architect's thinking and the modern engineer's tools.
- What you do
- Walk the stage 3 lessons, carry out the capstone, and build a small automation tool that runs nightly at work or in your lab.
- Done when
- You presented the capstone in ten minutes, and the tool has run for a month without help.
5 · Teach and pick the next step
- Goal
- Locking understanding in by teaching, and deciding on CCIE or another path.
- What you do
- Run a workshop for colleagues or write three articles on the hardest things you learned, then judge: does CCIE fit your role now?
- Done when
- Someone else learned something from you and used it, and you have a written decision on the next step.

The task: an engineer at a telecom company passed CCNA two years ago, works on routing, and wants to become a senior within a year. What do you advise?
The answer: their role is close to providers, so the best fit is CCNP Service Provider or CCNP Enterprise with advanced routing, depending on what their company runs. Their plan: three months for the mid-level stage focused on BGP and MPLS, then the core exam, then the concentration. Alongside: half a page after every hard BGP fault, and a small tool that checks BGP sessions and filters every night. After a year: a certificate, a tool their team uses, and ten written investigations. That is a strong promotion file, not a certificate alone.
Myth vs Reality
| Myth | Reality |
|---|---|
| CCIE is the only road to being a senior. | Plenty of seniors have no CCIE. Visible expertise, projects and design prove the level too. |
| The more certificates you collect, the higher your pay. | One deep certificate in your role, backed by experience, is worth more than five shallow ones. |
| A senior does not need to write code. | Automation is now part of every modern network engineer's job, and a senior writes the tools or leads those who do. |
Where you meet it at work
📈Promotion
A file with a certificate, projects and written investigations convinces any panel.
🧑🏫Leading the team
A senior coaches juniors and reviews their changes.
🌍Working anywhere
CCNP and cloud certificates are known in every market.
Test your understanding
What is the core exam for CCNP Enterprise?
ENCOR is the core, plus one concentration exam.
What sets CCIE apart from CCNP?
After the qualifying exam comes a full lab day in design, deployment and operations.
Which certificate fits a cloud network engineer on Azure?
Azure Network Engineer Associate is dedicated to networking on Azure.
What is the strongest proof of expertise besides a certificate?
What can be seen and read convinces more than what is said.
What is the done-when for the ENCOR phase in the plan?
The condition is practical and measured, not the passing of time.
Quick review cards
Check Your Understanding
Why pick the role before the certificate?
Because the role decides which certificate helps you, and a certificate with no role stays a piece of paper.
What do you write after every hard fault?
The symptoms, what you thought, what you found, and what you changed so it does not recur.
When is CCIE a fitting next step?
When your role is deep in enterprise or provider networks, you have years of hands-on work, and time for a long lab.
